How to store water at home
Water supplies in the UK are very reliable, but storms or burst mains can interrupt them for a day or two.
How much
Plan for about 3 litres per person per day for drinking and basic hygiene, for at least 3 days. Add extra for pets.
How to store it
- Shop-bought bottled water is simplest. Check the date and rotate it every year.
- If filling your own containers, use clean food-grade containers, fill from the cold tap, seal, label with the date and replace every 6 months.
- Store somewhere cool and dark, away from chemicals.
If your supply is interrupted
- Check your water company's website or social media for updates and bottled water stations.
- Customers on the Priority Services Register can get bottled water delivered.
- Your hot water cylinder and toilet cistern (not the bowl) hold usable water for washing.
